Poster summary

Polyacetylenes are a group of specialized metabolites potentially useful in therapy as antitumorals, being frequent components of the Asteraceae family (especially the Baccharis L. genus). Previously, we studied the unusual composition of B. palustris essential oil (BPEO) from Uruguay, identifying a series of C9-polyacetylenes. Here, we re-analyze this sample conducting several gas chromatography/mass spectrometry protocols with the aim to find new components. Thus, ten oxygenated terpenoids were detected for the first time in BPEO, several of them co-eluting with major components. The polyacetylenes baccharisdyine and the 7-dehydro-baccharisdyine geometric isomers were the main components, while other C9-polyacetylenes were tentatively identified. Applying GCxGC/HRMS-TOF and deconvolution it was possible to identify a lachnophyllum lactone (trace level) of undefined stereochemistry in the second chromatographic dimension. Being B. palustris a highly endangered species, our results might contribute to its preservation as a valuable source of polyacetylenes whose bioactivities need to be studied further.
