Poster summary
- The objective of the study was to examine the feasibility of extrusion/spheronization techniques for converting liquid castor oil into solid self-emulsifying pellets. A D-optimal mixture design was used for formulating self emulsifying pellets using castor oil, surfactant, cosurfactant, lactose, MCC, corn starch and HPMC by extrusion spheronization technique. The effect of composition of oil, surfactant and cosurfactant blend on dispersion time, resultant globule size and polydispersibility index was studied. Additionally, pellet flow properties, hardness, size distribution and disintegration time was also evaluated. The morphology of castor oil pellets was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Free flowing pellets were obtained with 30% of oil loading. SEM revealed sphericity and smooth surface of the oil loaded pellets. This developed system can serve as a carrier system for any activity as well as can also be used for delivery of castor oil.
