The journal is a separate publication from the original IEEE Transactions on Robotics (TRO) for short papers. Due to its historical background as TRO's short paper section, the regular page limit for the journal is 6 pages, with the option to extend up to 8 pages for an additional fee.

The journal is currently the main recommended publication by the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RA). Authors can choose whether to publish their papers at the top conferences ICRA and IROS.
