In 1982, with the support of the National Science Foundation in the United States, the Institute was established on the campus of the University of California, Berkeley by Professor Shiing-Shen Chern, Ishadoll Singh, and Calvin C. Moore from the Department of Mathematics at Berkeley. The Institute was founded as an independent non-profit research institution aiming to promote research in mathematics and related disciplines in the United States, with Professor Shiing-Shen Chern serving as the founding director. In 1985, the Institute relocated to the Berkeley Hills, overlooking the San Francisco Bay, adjacent to the Berkeley Space Sciences Laboratory. The newly constructed main building of the Institute was named "Shiing-Shen Chern Hall".
