Description

Outline

Drug resistance is an increasing health and economic concern with the emergence of diseases that respond poorly to standard treatment regimes. There are numerous ways by which drug resistance and drug deactivation can arise. The development of drugs that overcome these pathways is a key challenge today. This studentship will examine how highly strained alicyclic hydrocarbon systems, can be used to overcome and probe mechanisms of drug resistance in cancer therapeutics and antibiotics.

The studentship will provide expert training in synthetic chemistry, reaction development and medicinal chemistry, through the Tredwell and Fallis Groups in the School of Chemistry. Students will also develop the skills to perform biological assays and broader training in medical imaging and materials science.

The make-up of the supervisory team and collaborators allows the applicant to be participate in research across the interface of chemistry, biology and materials. The interdisciplinary nature of the research will provide the applicant with a comprehensive practical skillset and broad theoretical background ideally positioning them for careers in industrial or academic sectors.

Supervisory team

Dr Matthew Tredwell and Dr Ian Fallis.
